Grass
Track Racing Formula motor cycle grass track racing started some twenty five years ago
as a cheaper alternative to main stream grass track. The BSA Bantam was the
machine to be used. Two classes were created, juniors 12-16 years and seniors
over 16. Over the years tuning and frame modifications improved, riding
techniques blossomed, any idea that the racing would just be a slow canter round
were quickly dispelled. Some of the racing has been fantastic; there is no other
way to describe it. The
year 2002 Twenty five years on and were still going strong and looking forward to
the season ahead which usually starts around the end of March. There have been a
number of changes over the years. The biggest being the Honda 125cc unit which
was introduced in the late 1980’s to run alongside the BSA's. This proved to
be a real success. Around this time frame modifications and wheel sizes were
relaxed, thus allowing riders to use conventional types of grass track chassis. We are now able to cater for riders from 6 to 60 years of age. New for
this year is the cadet class, 6-9 year olds using Honda 100cc engines. The cub
class is for 9-12 year olds using the Honda 125cc engine, juniors are 12-16 year
olds and seniors 16 years and beyond. The latter two classes can either ride the
BSA Bantam or the Honda 125cc. All engines are run to a strict formula (limits
to tuning) to keep the racing more competitive. How is the
racing organised? By the three dubs that make up the Formula Motorcycle Grass track
Association and about thirty riders. The tracks are of oval design and about
25Oyds in length. Each rider will have two practice heats, five points scoring
rides and a final. Around 10 to 12 meetings a year provide us with championship
winners from each class. Meetings are run in the Shropshire, Midlands and North
West areas, What will
it cost me? Fifty pence per week will cover your racing number registration, postage
for regulations and newsletters. This also enters you into a monthly prize draw
where there is £40.00 up for grabs. Join one of the three clubs that form the
Association and obtain an ACU. license, this will cost £25.00.
Fees to enter the meetings are £9.00 for cadets and cubs, £12.00 for
juniors and £15.00 for seniors. Bikes cost around £500, if
you are prepared to build one yourself it is even cheaper. Second hand
riding gear and a good helmet will cost around £150 and you’re on the start
line. What about
safety? Safety is paramount to our organisation. We are governed by the Auto
Cycle Union (ACU) and follow their handbook on safety ropes, track marking,
marshals, first aid services, scrutineers etc. All these safety elements are
strictly adhered to. |
